Was it iin warm rinse in cold. If it has bright colors that may run wash it in 1/2 cup of white vinegar to set the color. Tumble dry so that if the fabric is going to shrink it does- before you add any trim or do any stitching.

It really depends on the fabric you're using. Polyester would need different care than wool, for example.
When you purchase the fabric, ask the salesperson about washing instructions.
