Any other tips are appreciated as well!Do I need to wash fabric before I make a quilt out of it?
If your fabric is a batik or any hand dyed fabric, you have to wash it. I bought some amish fabric and I have to wash it before I use it, there is so much extra dye. I've been told that if you are making a wallhanging or decorative item, washing is optional , since there most likely won't be a need to wash the project. For a quilt, Yes!! Washing is essential. If you are nervous about the dye content..washing can't hurt. If you do wash the fabric, use pinking shears on the edges so the fabric won't unravel. I hope I helpedDo I need to wash fabric before I make a quilt out of it?
yes
cottons and other fabrics shrink at different rates and can tear your blocks apart in your finished quilt.
yes
dyes can migrate from unwashed fabrics and can spoil colors where they land if the dye hasn't been exhausted by washing it 'gone'

some fabrics can have residual chemical in them that can make someone who works closely with them ill. don't risk this.
yes, if you dont then when u do wash it as a whole the different fabrics will shrink differently and pull away leaving tears... Good luck and welcome back to quilting!!
A majority of quilters say do wash the fabric first. But you also have to machine dry and then iron everything.
If you don't wash first it would be good to wash gently in cold water when finished to get the sizing out.
Follow the rule ';all or none';. If you wash one, wash them all. Having some prewashed and some not will definitely cause a shrinkage problem. Also if you plan to use muslin in the quilt or backing be sure to wash everything first because it will shrink at a different rate from your other cottons.
However don't take it too far. Do not wash the batting first, as it would probably just fall apart in the wash.
Wash for two reasons, 1. don't want it to shrink and 2. the colors might run. One mfg. company has something out to help keep colors from running. Check your laundry supplies for it.
This sometimes depends upon the type of quilt you are creating. If you are not doing a Rag Quilt, then washing helps to shrink the fabrics and avoids color running after making your quilt. Then you end up with a nicer, prettier quilt because the color won't run into the other colors and the shrinking won't distort your patchwork.
I have been sewing for 49 years and have been quilting since 1990.
Good luck with your quilting! %26gt;^..^%26lt;
