When fabric softener gets into the wash cycle accidentally, does the detergent still clean the clothes?

Not if the detergent you used was an anionic detergent.., when anionic detergents and fabric softeners (cationic detergents) get together, it forms a waxy goo that deposits in the clothes and attracts more dirt. The reaction is called ';reverse saponification';.

If you used a non-ionic detergent, you're fine.
