Is it alright to wash (not dry clean and not placed in the dryer) a 65% polyester and 35% rayon fabric?

would washing shrink the material as opposed when it is dried in a dryer?

thanksIs it alright to wash (not dry clean and not placed in the dryer) a 65% polyester and 35% rayon fabric?
Yeah, you can wash the heck out of poly and rayon...

How do you wash clothes so it doesn't make the balls of fabric?

on most of my hoodies, theres these little balls that formed all over and i have to take them off and its really annoyingHow do you wash clothes so it doesn't make the balls of fabric?
Wash them with the side you don't want to ball on the inside. Keep it that way for drying. Dry on a low heat. How do you wash clothes so it doesn't make the balls of fabric?
Hello..be sure to wash flipped inside out, and NEVER wash them with towels!
Wash them inside out.
don't wash in a top load washer, which breaks down the fabric to start with and makes the 'little balls' with its twisting agitation action. wash in a front loader at a laundromat and hang on hangers instead of drying in a dryer.

Why is unused fabric conditioner left in the cleaned dispenser of my washing machine at the end of the wash.?

I have scrubbed the dispenser and assembled it correctly but the fabric conditioner is still unused. The machine is a Bosch Maxx WFL 2260.Why is unused fabric conditioner left in the cleaned dispenser of my washing machine at the end of the wash.?
I have a bosch machine and mine does the same maybe this is a faultWhy is unused fabric conditioner left in the cleaned dispenser of my washing machine at the end of the wash.?
I don't know why wash machines do that -- mine does that also. I found mixing a capful of water with it helps it wash away better.
don't know, mine does it all the time, i just use for the next wash.
Make sure you add water to the fabric conditioner in the little whole you put it in.

  • What is the best way to wash and dry my new hoodie without making the soft inside fabric less soft?

Im looking for techniques in the washing and drying process. thanks! What is the best way to wash and dry my new hoodie without making the soft inside fabric less soft?
hand wash or dryclean. there is an at home drycleaning thing you can just buy at Wal-Mart too. that might work. good luck!!!What is the best way to wash and dry my new hoodie without making the soft inside fabric less soft?
Follow the unstructions in the back of tag or dont wash is so often if yo wear it once and it didnt get dirty put it back in your closet and dont wear it again until 1-2 weeks

Do you put your fabric conditioner in at the beginning of the wash?

or just before a rinse and spin?

i put mine in at the begininng and always use double what is recommended but never seems to really smell of conditioner, should i put it in later???Do you put your fabric conditioner in at the beginning of the wash?
I usually wash them, then add the fabric softener when it's in the rinse cycle. It makes your clothes smell a whole lot better.Do you put your fabric conditioner in at the beginning of the wash?

For some reason, the fabric conditioner seems to be dispensed into the clothes before the final rinse if you put it in early. I don't usually use a fabric conditioner, especially in the Summer when you can peg the washing out if you have sole garden access. However, when I dry the clothes indoors, if I use fabric conditioner, I always put it in the dispenser towards the end of the washing cycle, just before the final rinse. This works.
Conditioner should go in during the rinse cycle. That's when an automatic feeder in washers will put it.

Downey庐 made a gizmo called the Downey Ball that you would fill correctly and put it in with the clothes. During the first spin cycle, just before the rinse cycle starts filling with rinse water, a weight on the fill plug of the ball gets pulled aside and opens the ball. The softener then mixes with the rinse water and gets agitated into the clothes. I have used one and it works fine.

It sure beats having to babysit the washer or having all your softener washed out at the start.
I have this problem with mine all my washing had no smell of conditioner so now I wait until about 10 or 20 mins into the cycle. Think mines's has a slight fault because it was taking the washing powder and conditioner all in at the same time at the beginning of the wash and it shouldn't. So rather than buy a new washing machine, I wait to put it in the conditioner. Sometimes I do forget though which is a nightmare.
Yes i tend to put fabric softener at the start and at rinse and spin i use conditioner.

i put this in at the start

I put it in at the beginning too. It might well be that you're just so used to the scent you dont notice it any more! Try swapping to another brand for a while and see if you notice.
I put mine in the little compartment marked for it. The machine then adds it automatically at the correct point in the cycle.
Unless you have a fabric softener dispenser, put it in during the rinse cycle or use a fabric softener ball.
yes at the start, but never when washin towels because that takes the softness out of them
i put mine in at the start all my washing smells of conditioner i used concentrate
I use a Downy ball. They open in the rinse cycle

Any particular way to wash and care for bamboo sheet sets? Is it okay to use fabric softener on them?

The only thing I use on ALL of my laundry are soap nuts. They are truly the purest most natural way of cleaning your fine fabrics(especially bamboo). Best part is that they naturally soften so there is not need to buy fabric softener, but if you NEED something, white vinegar does the trick. Add it to the load and it doesn't leave a smell.

Check the tag on the towels. There should be washing instructions on it.

Bamboo towels? What are those? Although bamboo products such as area rugs and flooring have become more commonplace not as many people are familiar with bamboo towels. Naturally, it sounds like an odd idea to make a towel out of a material that is tough and grainy. However, because of the manner in which they are manufactured bamboo towels rival almost any other towel type in softness.

Once a person gets their hands on a bamboo towel there is no turning back. So how does one take care of these high quality towels? What is the best way to preserve this exceptional softness?

There are a few practices one can carry out to get the most out of their sustainable bamboo towels.

First, follow the washing instructions to the letter. They are not overly complicated. However, cleaning bamboo towels improperly can result in a damaged good. Use your washer machine鈥檚 most delicate cycle. Other settings tear at the bamboo fibers, and although these fibers are resilient, over time degrade their quality faster than normal. The gentle cycles allow for a thoroughly cleaned towel without grating it. Also it is best to wash bamboo towels in cold water.

As with washing, dry your bamboo towels on a slow tumble dry setting. More intense cycles can overly heat and work the towels degrading their quality. Remember also not to overstuff your washer or dryer. Not only does such a practice put your expensive machines on a path of destruction, everything is cleaned less effectively.

Do not employ bleach or fabric softeners either because the rayon fibers extracted from the bamboo do not react favorably to them. They can ruin a beautiful towel鈥檚 aesthetic or eat away at its thickness.

Second, upon sighting any loose strings hanging from your bamboo towels, remove them immediately. These strings can get caught on things and end up ripping into the towel. It is best to use a scissors and not your hands for this. Ripping by hand is difficult, due to the strong nature of the bamboo material, and it leads to unraveling. We have all experienced pulling a thread from a shirt that seems to never end, as the shirt starts to disappear into your hand. A simply snip will do.

Third, storage is important. You do not want to leave your towel in a place when heat comes out, such as floor vents. This is a fire hazard as with leaving any materials near constant heat sources. You鈥檙e also better off keeping them in a closet as opposed to the basement or the bathroom. A bathroom is not the worst place for them but closets give them the most protect from variations in temperature and moisture, ensuring longevity. Obviously, the basement is a bad idea because it is inconvenient and basements are usually the dingiest rooms in a home.

Fourth, treat your bamboo towels like any other high quality good you possess. Use them as they are meant to be used, i.e., drying off after washing up or showering. Clean them when they get dirty. And, most essentially, enjoy the unique qualities they have to offer (e.g., extreme softness and absorption).

    What's a high-quality, won't-run-in-the-wash permanent fine-tip marker, good for writing on fabric?

And don't say sharpie because those run!

I love to draw on my clothes and when I use sharpies they fade in the wash or run, so is there a marker-brand similar to sharpie fine-tips, but specifically made for writing on clothes? What's a high-quality, won't-run-in-the-wash permanent fine-tip marker, good for writing on fabric?
Sharpies are not fabric markers. You need to look in a craft store for fabric markers.

Can you wash a shirt with fabric paint?

me and my friends are making shirts for our school dance and we wanna be able to rewear them so if we put fabric markers, pens, or whatever on it can we wash them? Can you wash a shirt with fabric paint?
If you read the instructions/or box that they came in on the pens/markers it should tell you how to wash your clothing. If I had to suggest a way to wash them I would tell you to wash them on the gentle cycle in cold water/ cold rinse inside of a pillow case and let air dry.Can you wash a shirt with fabric paint?
I suggest using fabric paint and then heat set the t-shirts in the dryer for 20 minutes. After that you are able to wash without the paint coming off.

  • I have a corduroy couch I want to clean. Can I take the cushions out and run the fabric through the wash?

Yes you can. Just wash them on a delicate cycle in cold water and use the lowest setting on your dryer (air dry if you have it). I have a denim couch and do the same........no problems at all!!!

While the covers are washing, spray the cushion with Lysol or Febreeze!

Best of Luck! 脺I have a corduroy couch I want to clean. Can I take the cushions out and run the fabric through the wash?
Yes you can wash them. Use cold water and a gentle detergent. You can dry them on low heat, but to be safe, I always air dry mine.I have a corduroy couch I want to clean. Can I take the cushions out and run the fabric through the wash?
Yes, you can. The only caution is that there may be a color change when done. This would make them not match, perfectly, the body. Do the cold water if you want to try.
No. Chances are they will shrink and won't fit back on the cushions. Use upholstery spray cleaner like Woolite or hire a rug and upholstery cleaning co. to come out and clean it. Look in the Yellow Pages.
By law there should be a tab on the couch that lists the specs on it. Some manufacturers also list the cleaning suggestions.

If for some reason there is no tab, corduroy should clean up well in the wash on cold water. Dry on medium heat.

Try only one cover first before trying the rest of them.

Why do women wear powder perfumes body lotion and use fabric softner and scented body wash? What would happen?

if they didint put all that stuff on?Why do women wear powder perfumes body lotion and use fabric softner and scented body wash? What would happen?
You get chicks like me. quit generalizing we don't all foof ourselves up, I much prefer sleep in than waste my time putting lotion on. And you find an unscented body wash, bars of soap get pretty gross in their little containers getting lugged between a dorm room and a shower. Why do women wear powder perfumes body lotion and use fabric softner and scented body wash? What would happen?
I dont think anything would really happen, but I think that we would take awaay a lot. Scent is a very strong sence. Different scents can bring back memories and even trigger thoughts. Certain scents are even comforting. they say vanilla has a very strong power to atract men. the scent is included in many womens perfumes because it carries a rich scent that twirks memories of comfprt, like baking, being home with mom, growing up. Scent is very important to life!
they would probably be just fine with out the conflict of fragrances. Amazing what a good bath does for a person.
They would have more money to spend on other things.
They will not feel so neat and clean.
Scent is a primitive sense that works its effects below the radar. This appeals to animal gratifications, while being an effective manipulative tool.
Nothing would happen. My wife does not use any scented products, since the smells can trigger a migraine.
We would all be able to breathe easier and get less cancer.
Perhaps we just like the smell. The world would be a duller place without a little olfactory variety.

How do you wash delicate lingerie from Victoria's Secret without snagging the fabric?

Since moving from my parents house, it seems that when I do laundry my negligee's and lace bra's/panties seem to get snagged and pulled. I don't want to have to constantly spend $50.00 or so on a new bra or lingerie set. What are some way's to keep your delicates clean and in great shape? also what laundry detergent would be best? How do you wash delicate lingerie from Victoria's Secret without snagging the fabric?
You need to purchase a bra buddy; it's a plastic ball that you put your bras in , it works fantastic and keeps my bras in good shape. You also need to purchase several mesh bags in different sizes according to the size of the article you want to wash. Always make sure all buttons are buttoned, zippers zipped, snaps snapped, ect. before putting articles in mesh bags. Do not overload mesh bags, articles need space to get clean.Warm water, cool rinse and gentle cycle only.

You can use woolite,oxi-wash,dreft or ivory snow. How do you wash delicate lingerie from Victoria's Secret without snagging the fabric?
You should be doing lace, and fine things in the sink, with a gentle fabric wash that is designed for those kinds of materials. I really like Soak Fabric wash. It smells really good, and you don't even have to rinse it.

I found that you can just use regular laundry detergent. (I use Tide with Downy powder myself) and just put it on the permanent press cycle in the washing machine. But here's the thing, DO NOT DRY THEM! They can make them all twisted and scrunched, and then when you wash them next time it wears down on the threads and that's how they can get snagged and twisted and torn.

Hang your bras and things up on hangers after washing. You'll have to wait for them to dry, but it's better than spending fifty bucks on a new set. If that doesn't work, the only thing I have left to say would be to wash them gently by hand.
    Hi.

Um Vic Secret is kinda the only place I shop and kinda have a contract with, but I suggest if ya have to put them in the washer use a mesh bag and don't wash with anything else and check all the settings, and use warm wash, cold rinse mabye.

I pretty much use Woolite. I do a lot of intimates laundry every week. Oh I also never put them in the dryer. I hang all mine or lay them over the big screen TV I never use.

    Dallas
i would highly recommend wash them by hand, last time i put a VA bra in my washer the cups got bent out of shape. just wash it in sink and throw it over the shower rod to dry. otherwise buy a lingerie bag, VA sells them here:http://www2.victoriassecret.com/commerce鈥?/a>
I believe there is a mesh bag you can buy to put your delicates in to wash. However, I put mine inside a pillow case that I added a zipper to on one end .. it works great. The hardest part was adding the zipper. Also, I never put underwire bras in the dryer. Let them dry on a hanger. The metal will bend if it gets too warm
    Mesh laundry bag:

    Forever New fabric wash:

    http://www.ohcheri.com/bottles-fabric-ca鈥?/a>

And definitely don't put anything in the dryer.
Hand wash, or get a lingerie bag and wash on delicate. The bags aren't expensive. Also, don't put them in the dryer.

You can go with woolite, or baby detergent, like Ivory Snow.
They sell mesh bags specifically for delicates. You can find one at Target or someplace like that in the laundry aisle.

Otherwise, hand wash them with Woolite.

Will a regular sharpie wash out of fabric?

i just got a teeshirt autographed will the sharpie wash out cuz i dont want it too

what happens if i wash it?Will a regular sharpie wash out of fabric?
If you want to preserve it better....put your iron on high cotton and go over it several minutes on both sides. That will help set it in. Or take it to an airbrush artist who can trace the signature and set it for you. Will a regular sharpie wash out of fabric?
if it doesn't come off totally it will fade and smear the autograph on the shirt, you are best to store the shirt only by washing it under the arms area to store it away for memories of what were the good old days for you in the future., hang to dry do not place it in the drier.

How can I get my clothes to smell good when i wash them? I have used all kinds of fabric softener,?

I had someone tell me to use Gain, I have used Tide, and I have used the downy ball, I have used the fabric softener and the washing powder at the same time, I have used liquid washing detergent and the fabric softener at the same time. I have also used 2 dryer sheets when drying%26gt; I have used all kinds of dryer sheets, I even tried the cheap kind, but my clothes don't come out smelling fresh, they smell okay and clean, There was a girl that went to my daughters school that gave use some of her clothes and they all smelled so fresh and they told me they used Gain, but I don't have the same effects, Any suggestions? How can I get my clothes to smell good when i wash them? I have used all kinds of fabric softener,?
I love Downy Simple Pleasures fabric softners and dryer sheets. But, I only use frangrance-free detergent (like Tide Free), because too many scents can make your clothes smell worse. I suggest finding a fabric softer and dryer sheet with matching scents and using a fragrance-free detergent for best results. That way you have one scent going through your clothes--instead of two or three :)How can I get my clothes to smell good when i wash them? I have used all kinds of fabric softener,?
It could be water or your washing maching. Have you ever washed your washer with washer cleanser? And also I want to recommend you 'MelaPower' laundry detergent because it removes build-up from your clothes, which is built up from your water and even detergent and causes your clothes smell bad. At the same time it is made of biodegradable ingredients so it's really good to your children's skin.
try tucking a few of the dyer sheets into the dresser and in a mesh bag in the closet. It will help keep that just washed smell in your clothes.
Theres an off chance it could be your water. There is also a chance you are asking you clothes to smell what seems like fresh to you, that is, a specific scent. If you want your clothes to smell like something in paricular, like the smell of Gain in your friends laundry that is different from smelling clean to another person. If the same products don't give you the same results, then its probably is the water as hardness/softness, gives different results. I iron my sheets with lavender water for a nice fragrant finish, but I don't know if you want to get that nuts for kids clothes.
Try Suavitel liquid softener. The blue bottle works the best. They sell this brand at Target and Walmart. I love how my clothes smell and the fragrance lasts over a long time.. (2 weeks +) I use the liquid and dont even need a dryer sheet!!! Use the suggested amount and you will see it really does work. Also, its usually less expensive than the other name brands. This brand is primarily marketed to the Latino market, but I dont really care about that so much, it works wonders. I had a friend that always had such a clean crisp lingering scent, and I asked what soap he was using, he said i use the suavitel fabric softener and man does it work! Trust me on this !!! I ahve used all the designer fragrences, tide, gain, all, etc. nothing compares to this.
Well, it could be the water. If you have hard water or heavily treated water, it may be blocking the lovely smell of your detergents and fabric softeners. If you have to opportunity, try using a liquid fabric softener in the last rinse cycle of your wash and then after the last spin cycle, hang your clothes outside in a fairly sunny place. Get fresh air to it and not a closed up, hot dryer. If you don't have a clothes line, you can get one for under $10 at IKEA that folds up when you aren't using it. And they have larger ones as well if needed. Upside, you're getting fresh air into your clothes. Downside, over many washings and prolonged sun exposure, you could lose some color in your clothes. Or, try Frebreeze. Good luck!
Sometimes I'll put a drop of my fav body wash in the washer. For example my current fav is a body wash that smells like lavender, so my clothes come out of the washer smelling like lavender.
I know that adding a cup of baking soda to your wash gets odors out. so if it is your water the baking soda should neutralize it. also a cup or 2 of vinegar in your wash to soak will make your clothes smell fresher. I know that sounds weird because vinegar stinks but it really does work. add a cup of vinegar to your washing machine and run it with no clothes in it will freshen your washing machine and if you use the same in your dish washer you will get the same results.
I've had good luck with Arm %26amp; Hammer laundry detergents. Even for the seriuosly nasty stuff I get from working as a handyman. Some times I come home stinking like you wouldn't believe.
I read the other answers, and I would go back to basics.

Try adding plain baking soda to your water as it fills the tub along with the detergent that you use. I would use approximately

1/4 cup to a normal load.

If that doesn't work, try adding 1/4 cup of vinegar to the wash water instead of baking soda.

Hope this will freshen your laundry.
Do you hang your clothes out in the fresh air? this make麓s a great difference to clothes,They don麓t have the same smell if you put them in the dryer, sure you find a difference in smell once they have been outside , even when you iron them if you use the softener you should still smell the soap plus the softener. I do, Fresh
The one who gave you the clothes may have stored them in a drawer with ';satchets.'; This would leave a lingering scent on the clothes.

To get the maximum impact of fabric softner, try washing your clothes as you normally would but pour in a couple of cap fulls of Hydrogen Peroxide. This will help to remove any body odors so the scent can be stronger.

  • How to freshen fabric I cant wash...?

My son is due in 8 days and we have a bassinet that was kept in our basement for 1+ years. Any antibacterial spray is good. Unscented would be best in case the baby is sensitive to fragrances. ';Green Wise'; products are safer to use than most other products. How to freshen fabric I cant wash...?
wipe it down with what ever you have and then wipe again with plain water

let stand in sun for an hour if you can

any fabrics should be washer safe, check for tags

Use Fabreeze, it works miracles and they have a disinfecting kind.

cover material with wax paper...that should work and not stick to the iron :)
You could try melting it on. But eventually it's going to wash out. Try to wash it as little as possible.
Try putting it in the oven for 10 minutes - not too hot!

    Or try varnish
You could try ';ironing'; it in, but I would place a sheet of absorbent paper under the fabric and between the iron and the fabric to prevent the iron surface from beibg scorched by the wax in the crayon.
They make special crayons just for that. Check your local craft store.

Clorox 2... let them soak in the washer then go thru the whole cycle... that should get it out. It could b the water... or if they were sitting damp for too long.. mold started to set in.
place towels up to dry dont wash a bug load together tide with bleach is safe maybe aextra rinse could help.

what kind of water do u have? sulpur water will do that. good luck
Are you letting them air dry after use? If you leave them all crumpled together in a basket or somewhere similar, they are probably mildewing before you wash them.
Wash with hot water and get them out of the washer as soon as they;re done.
You are not suppose to put fabric softners in towels. To get rid of the smell get ';Odors Out'; in market with cleaning products. Put 1 teaspoon in with towels in the wash cycle. In the rinse cycle put 1/4 cup White Vinager instead of softner. When drying make sure they are completely dry before folding.
the bad smell may be due to molds or some sort of bacteria. the most effective way to get rid of of these is by soaking it in a lysol-water solution (just follow the dilution instructions). the lysol may smell while the fabric is wet but once completely dry, your towels will smell clean and fresh.

baking soda is another alternative. try soaking it in baking soda %26amp; water, or you may put baking soda in your last rinse cycle (without fabric softener of course).
try rewashing again. try oxi-clean to break down anything left in the towels.

if your clothes are not smelly then it sounds like to me that you are not getting the towels dry enough and they are soured causing bacterias to grow.

rewash everything in the cabinet around them and dry till very dry on high heat.

clean the cabinet out with a disinfectant cleaner and place linens back on shelf. make sure they have room to breathe by letting air circulate around them or keep doors cracked for a while.

make sure towels are up off the floor or around damp places to create mold and mildew.
    Try this.

A lot of other japanese products are specially formulated for indoor drying (mainly because there are a lot of high rise apartment/ condominium type residence in Japan I guess).

Anyway, not sure if it's available in your country, but I've been using Top and it smells real good after that even when it's left to dry indoor! ;-)

    Good luck!
Add a box of baking soda to the wash water. Let it soak for 30 min. then turn back on. It should help.
yes, defiantly hang flat to dry out,and turn on the fan to dry out the bathroom as well.

If the walls smell bad where you hang the towels,it will transfer to the towels, which just means yet another chore,...omg.Personally,I believe bathrooms should be power-washable,...lol !
i think u should dry them

when ever u feel they are wet or somethin

Does 100% cotton fabric shrink when you wash it, when you use the dryer, or both?

I am new to sewing and recently purchased a 100% cotton fabric to make a skirt. I have been getting confliciting answers from vendors, tailors, etc... Is it ok to just start my project with my fabric without washing? Can I wash the skirt with cold water and air dry after completed? Would that be ok? Or .....Does 100% cotton fabric shrink when you wash it, when you use the dryer, or both?
Yes, cotton will shrink from hot water and from a hot dryer. A good habit before beginning any sewing project is to pre-wash any washable fabrics according to recommended guidelines. In this case I would wash your cotton on the warmest setting possible - hot for white, warm for bright colors. Follow this by drying on hot or warm depending on the colors. In general, wash and dry the fabric as you would the completed project. I would also recommend ironing the fabric before cutting out your pattern pieces.

Another good reason to pre-wash is to rid the fabric of any sizing, chemicals, excess dyes used when the fabric was manufactured. If working with bright colors, you should ';set'; the color beforehand. (Ever worn a dark color and it rubbed off on your undergarments or worse, your skin?) This is done by dissolving 1/4 cup salt in a sink of cold water and immersing/soaking your fabric for 1/2 hour or so.

Although you can hand wash/delicate machine cold wash and hang dry - why not take the extra step before making your item. This way you have the option to toss it in the dryer and you won't have to worry about shrinkage.

Best of luck on learning your new hobby. It is quite rewarding to make your own clothing. :-)Does 100% cotton fabric shrink when you wash it, when you use the dryer, or both?
Nope not a good idea. It will sit funny and the seams won't be as good. Wash it in hot water, dry it in a hot dryer. Press it before cutting and press every seam as you sew it.
Usually the fabric is marked ';pre-shrunk';. If there is no such indication on the fabric you purchased, go ahead and wash it in COLD water, then dry the fabric as you normally dry your other items. Pre-washing and drying will eliminate any fear you may have about the fabric.

    Good luck!
The dryer because the moisture leaving makes the fibers tighten up if you hang you clothes to dry they wont shrink
    idk

    i dont know
Cotton definitely shrinks. Not really from washing it on a hot cycle as much as drying it on anything other than air or low heat. Most people recommend washing the fabric prior to sewing so than an anomalies with the fabric come out and don't affect the way your fabric lays due to the stitching. You should be able to machine wash your skirt after completion. Hand washing and air drying will definitely reduce the wear and tear on the skirt from cleaning but, cotton fabric can certainly withstand a wash and dry cycle.

How do I get fabric paint to set in and not wash out?

I do airbrushing on fabrics...all kinds. Also, I use fabric glitter sprays and such.

The paint I use is just for fabrics and I've washed them and the color got lighter after one wash.

Could I use something like scotchguard to help protect the painting and glitter from washings? Or, is there another way?

(please, no spam)How do I get fabric paint to set in and not wash out?
I used to set the colors of my stitching with vinegar and water. I used about 1/2 cup of white vinegar to a sinkful of cold water. Allow it to soak for a couple of hours, launder as usual.

  • How much does each type of fabric shrink after you put it in the wash?

For example, how about jeans made of 99% cotton and 1% spandex? This always bothers me when I buy clothes because I'm not exactly sure if I should buy one size bigger just in case it shrinks. But if it doesn't shrink, then I end up like a fool... LIKE A FOOL!How much does each type of fabric shrink after you put it in the wash?
Okay Phoebe (from Friends, she said that ';like a fool'; thing). Anyway, Rayon shrinks a lot! Cotton shrinks most of the time and Polyester doesn't shrink much at all.How much does each type of fabric shrink after you put it in the wash?
Always take your jeans out of dryer after 30 minutes. Air dry to prevent shrinkage. Thirty minutes of drying is enough to soften jeans and eliminate creases. That way you can buy jeans that fits perfectly.
JEANS ARE USUALLY PRE SHRUNK COTTON HOLDS AND OTHER FAB SHRINKS WINTER CLOTHING HANG TO DRY OR LIE FLAT
Really read the care insrtuctions, well. This combo of materials is likely to shrink, and, therefore, shouild be washed in cool water. **See if the manufacturer has info stating that garment is ';pre-shrunk.'; Good luck!
Buy your cloths from trusted retailer or brand name. I only encounter shrink clothing from cheap manufacturer which reminds me not to purchase from them again.

What is the lowest temperature wash which will effectively kill bacteria in fabric?

I use a colour-protecting detergent in my washing machine which doesn't contain bleach, so there's not a lot to kill bacteria apart from the water temperature. If I intentionally skip the fabric freshner %26amp; leave a towel damp after washing it starts to smell after a few days, so I can only guess the wash isn't killing off bacteria. What is the lowest temperature wash which will effectively kill bacteria in fabric?
    A temperature of 140 - 165 F kills most bacteria.

However I would think that the ';warm'; setting on your machine would be good enough because of the presence of detergent which kills a lot of bacteria even at the lower temp. You can wash towels on hot if you are worried about it. If you leave any clothing damp for a few days it will start to grow mold %26amp; bacteria. It picks it up the air. You should always dry towels to completion after washing them, either by ';hot ';setting on a dryer or hang it outside to dry. What is the lowest temperature wash which will effectively kill bacteria in fabric?
The purpose of washing clothes with detergent isn't to kill bacteria. The machine or your hands use the agitation process as a means of applying mechanical friction, 'shaking off' or scrubbing dirt and albeit some bacteria away. The detergents and soaps trap the dirt and rinse it away. Unless you are washing with bleach or lysol (don't do that you'll ruin your clothes, haha) you'll still have some bacteria on your laundry.
    67 degrees Celsius
The soap used for washing and the water itself will kill any damaging bacteria. Of course there is always bacteria in the environment, so you can't get rid of it once and for all.
You would have to boil it to kill all bacteria which is not really possible in a washing machine. You would probably kill most with hot water but it doesn't take them long to recover their population. There are also bacterial spores in the air that would quickly inhabit anything exposed.
140 degrees F will kill most bacteria. Your detergent kills bacteria also. However leaving the towels damp in the washer will cause them to smell. The dryer kills bacteria. Sunshine helps kill bacteria if you are drying them outside. THey need air.

Do not set you water heater for 140F because it could easily burn someone who doesnt know that it is set that ot.
    You can't kill bacteria.

Any you kill will resettle the moment it comes out of the machine.

Bacteria is part of life, accept it.

If you want to clean at low temperatures, you need a special detergent which works at low temps, but be aware, that in doing this, it will contiue to work as a detergent when flushed away in the environment, at low temperatures, therefoe pollutioning much more than a normal detergent
If you leave damp washing hanging about it'll smell no matter how clean and bacteria free it was to start with.
most bacteria in the northern hemisphere will die at 0 kelvin and 100 kelvin. It is the warming up and cooling down that causes the bacteria to form and multiply.

Your wash powder will kill most of the bacteria along with old fashioned water. Make sure it is dry and it will be clean enough for use
Not necessarily. After several days bacteria will start to grow causing the smell. You could do a 95 degree wash and it would still pong after several days.
Water temperature won't make much of a difference. Soap and bleach are the only things that will have a chance really killing the bacteria, and even those won't be 100% effective. Leaving wet clothes lying around will cause bacterial growth - because its not really possible to get every tiny bacteria in every fiber of cloth. Additionally, the bacteria from the air will ';recontaminate'; the clothing (especially when wet) and grow. The best thing to slow growth is wash the clothes with fabic softener and immediately dry them - the fabric softener will loosen the fabric allowing better cleaning, but it won't be perfect. Keeping it dry is the most effective.

My girlfriend will not put fabric softner in when she is doing my wash.?

..how do i convince her that just washing clothes is not enough. its a science! My girlfriend will not put fabric softner in when she is doing my wash.?
It sounds like there's a power struggle going on here. Be careful, or she'll start peeing in your soup and cleaning the toilet with your toothbrush. Since you want your clothes washed a certain way, you should wash them yourself. I'm married, and I wash my own clothes because I'm picky like you are. You have to learn how to choose your battles. My girlfriend will not put fabric softner in when she is doing my wash.?
you don't like how she does it - do it yourself.
you don't have to have it my kids are allergic to it maybe she is if you have to have it do your own
DO IT YOUR SELF if you dont appreciate her doing it her own way at least its washed half way. let her know you like your clothes with softner
be grateful she is doing it
Buy a great big jug of it that you put up on the shelf (the kind that has the button on it so she doesn't have to lift it) and it will be easy and convenient for her plus tell her how much you payed for it and she might not want to waste it. Or, you could do a few loads of laundry yourself with it and she might like the way they turn out. Also, fabric softner helps to get all of the soap out of clothes.
I used to use the fabric sheets UNTIL I tried liquid softener. WOW what a difference!!! Love that stuff. You can get the non scented if she is allergic or hasn't found a scent she likes yet...But Liquid IS the way to go. It stops the fabrics from fraying with washing, It loosens hair and other things like feathers so it comes off in the dryer, and it helps in making your clothes look and feel new longer.
    Fabric softener adds oil back onto the clothes, I personally wash clothing to get oil (from bodies) off my clothing. It will keep towels from being absorbent and can deposit chemicals on to your skin. The oil can trap allergens on your clothes as well. Fabric softener is a useless product, but as P.T. Barnum said - ';there's a sucker born every minute.';
while the washer is going, sneak in some while she isn't looking
Fabric softener is a chemical poison which attaches itself to your clothes and is then transferred to your body and absorbed by your skin. It causes cancer. Don't use it.

Are crayola fabric markers permanent through wash?

Will they stay on, or come off after the wash? Are crayola fabric markers permanent through wash?
Fabric markers should stay on through the wash. That's what they're for, but the only way to know is to try it.Are crayola fabric markers permanent through wash?
Yes they are permanent through the wash. Yes they are suppose to stay on. Key word here is permanent. Hope this helps!!

Is fabric softener really necessary when doing a wash?

And if it is, why? Also, which is better, the sheets or the liquid form?Is fabric softener really necessary when doing a wash?
No. If you do decide yo use fabric softener, the liquid seems to make things much softer. Is fabric softener really necessary when doing a wash?
yes and no if you want your clothes to smell good and be soft then yes if not don't use it experiment see what happens
I think it is necessary, it makes your clothes much softer. I prefer the liquid, I dont know if there is much difference between the two.
    no not really
It depends on how hard or soft your water is, and the weather conditions of your area. If you have a vast difference in humidity, you'll have more static. If your clothes snap, crackle and pop when you bring them out of the dryer and they're clinging to themselves for dear life, then you need fabric softener. If you don't get zapped by your laundry, or if you're not zapping anyone else, then you don't need it. It does actually make the clothes feel better against your skin. Oh, a footnote with fabric softener...if you use it on towels they will not be as absorbent, so you might want to skip using it on them.
not really if you have to go to some formal occacion and you have to wear fancy cloathes you might want to
No. Fabric softener serves to do two things to your laundry. First it makes the clothes softer (hence the name). The second is that it (usually) contains a scent that remains on the clothes after the wash is complete. This may or may not be desirable. In the event that you like the softer feel of using fabric softener, but don't like the scent, several brands now make unscented fabric softeners.

In at least one type of laundry it is reported to be a bad idea to use fabric softener and that is towels. According to what I have heard, it reduces the towels absorbency. Though, I admit, I have never been able to tell the difference myself.
it is not necessary but using softner helps you not to have electricity on your clothes. I reccommend using it for darkcolour clothes, jeans, sheets, and towels.
not really but it makes everything smell soooo good. liquid or sheets are both good but you get what you pay for. buy the good kinds.
If you live in a hard water area - Totally!
No not really. Fabric softener makes clothes nice and soft while dryer sheets reduce static cling and a nice scent.
No I never use it when I'm washing but I use dryer sheets so there isn't so much static
No. It's just supposed to make your clothes softer and fluffier :)

    I don't usually use it, and when I do, I don't notice a difference.

    It's all a preference thing :)
Yeah, it makes the fabric nice and soft smells better , and when you wash your sheets with it it makes you sleepier (you naw what I mean feelin' me)
not if you put sheets in the dryer but if u r doing clothes that r not meant to be dried then use the liquid in the wash and wash your delicate alone do not dry them. The dryer may cause them to rip or shrink.
liquid and inless you want your clothes to be hard don't use it!!
No, I prefer suavitel which is a mexican secret weapon here all the mexicans here smell april fresh and it was the biggest mystery to me for the longest time and I finally discovered their secret. It comes in liquid for and sheets I like to use both myself.
Fabric isn't absolutely necessary. But it does make clothes softer and have less static cling. Liquid is better if you air dry your clothers. Otherwise, sheets are fine in the dryer.
Well if you like your clothes to have the texture of sandpaper, you can skip it altogether. Or you can use Tide that has Downy in the same bottle.
    no ,not necsary.

I f you are a single male, make sure you get the unscented kind. Women look for that smell to determine if your married or live at home with your mom.
No, it is not necessary, although it does remove static. It also makes your towels less absorbent.
You don't have to, but you'll have static cling until you do. I prefer the sheets, but it's really up to you which one you use.
I don't like it because I think it makes my skin itchy , I maybe allergic or sensitive to it. But my husband and his family use it and those strong smelling dryer sheets, in every wash to soften the clothes...but they smell like it , there homes reek with the smell of fabric softner...and they don't realize it. I don't use it in my home because I want people to smell my perfume and I don't like uneccessary chemicals in my home.
You can use vinegar instead and your clothes will smell clean and fresh. try it you'll see.

Do you use fabric softener when you wash newborn baby clothes?

I am using All--free and clear, which is hypoallergenic, but how do you make them smell good if there's no fragrance?Do you use fabric softener when you wash newborn baby clothes?
I don't use fabric softener in the wash. I use the free and clear too. I just throw a bounce sheet in the dryer with her clothes. It makes them smell a little bit and it doesn't seem to bother her skin!!Do you use fabric softener when you wash newborn baby clothes?
just use dreft..its made for babies and leave the clothes smellin great!
JUST USEDREFT WHEN WASHING AND WHEN YOU DRY THEM USE FABRIC SOFTNER SHEETS, IT MAKES THEM SMELL PRETTY
I used Dreft for the first 6 months or so. I finally ran out of the big jugs that I got for gifts and then started using All-free and clear with no softener. I have never used softener, I know with Dreft you don't need to because it's softens and makes the clothes smell good by itself.

***Anyone getting tired of the Jessica R thing( a few posts before me). I think we should report them. They have done this on a ton of questions.
dreft or any with out harsh chemicals.

i use dreft only with out the sheets who cares if the cloths smell pretty there going to spit up on them anyways i went and bought the dryer balls they show on TV and they make my sons cloths soft and not stiff.
The clothes don't need to smell good. Keeping your baby clean and in clean clothes is all that is needed

I use the Free %26amp; Clear too for my hubby and son's sensitive skin.
i use baby sensetive detergent and i always use a little of our softner, like huggies or cuddly, u cant bring in the babies washing without that beautiful scent, its what gives babies that baby smell
The baby makes them smell good!
Ryan's Mom is right - if they are clean, your beautiful baby's smell will come through. You just never know what is in all of those fabric softeners, and for things like towels and nappies, it actually stiffens the pile so they become rougher.
i never did cuz it made my son get hives and a rash. try washing one thing with your stuff first to see if there is a reaction
Dreft has a soft nice scent, and its recommended by Pedriaticians, I have been using Dreft for my daughter ever since she was born, and my stepdaughter has eczema and the Dreft is not bad for her.
no their skin can be sensative to it and break out
I agree with LRC. Dreft has a pleasant soft scent. Ive always used it when washing my newborns clothes. After about a month ill test our regular stuff out by washing socks or wash clothes in with the rest of our laundry and letting baby wear them. None of my babies ever reacted negatively to our regular detergent when they were introduced. (Also if you decide not to use fab. softener on your babies clothes and continue to use unscented detergent you can always lather your baby up in baby lotion. I love Johnson %26amp; Johnson's bedtime lotion....they smell good enough to nibble on after that.)
I don't use any fabric softener on my son's clothes. It can reduce the flame retardant properties and can cause rashes. I have really sensitive skin, so he probablly will too. Just to add, my Dr. told me that at 3 months you can usually switch to regular detergent. Just wash like 2 or 3 of his things with yours, and check for a reaction before using it all the time.
My daughter stayed in the NICU for 10 days after birth and I asked the same question to my nurse. She said to use something that is dye and fragrance free, so I use Bounce free. Most loads I only use 1/2 a sheet unless it's a big load.

My washer has the hole in the middle on the spinner and it says to fill to a certain point with water. Why does my washing machine stll drip fabric softener at the end of the wash cycle when it should be gone .?
You could use vinegar instead of commercial fabric softener.
If it is a front-loader with a drawer, You can take the drawer out and clean it. I know it sounds daft, but it can leave a residue or even go mouldy in there.

Clean out the whole area as best you can. If this doesn't work, there may be a blockage in the pipework somewhere.

Can you machine wash a 100% cotton Decorator Fabric?

    Cotton is washed as cotton.

Wash whites, darks and reds separately.

100% cotton should not be washed/dryed hot or it may shrink.

Decorator fabric? decorated with what? sequins = cool dryer and gentle wash cycle. Printed colors = cool wash to prevent fading. Glitter = cool water hand wash. Glued = may come off with any water. Can you machine wash a 100% cotton Decorator Fabric?
I think so....I've done it. Wash in cold water and on delicate.

Is it OK to wash your showering wash cloth in the washing machine with liquid fabric refreshener?

is it OK to wash your showering wash cloth in the washing machine with liquid fabric refreshener and febreze laundry odor eliminator? Is it OK to wash your showering wash cloth in the washing machine with liquid fabric refreshener?
It is fine but you get a better wash cloth if you do not use fabric conditioner. A lot of people especially in soft water areas do not rinse their face cloths sufficiently after use and this leads to a build up of soap residue which is the slimy feel you get in a cloth. As long as the cloth is used regularly (new ones have a lot of dye in them)I would wash it every time you wash colors .Is it OK to wash your showering wash cloth in the washing machine with liquid fabric refreshener?
You can but I will tell you this. When you use fabric softener, you will not get the absorbency in towels.

Also I found out when using things like that on wash cloths, you kind of get a slimy feeling when they get wet.

As far as odor eliminators, all you can do is try it out and see what results you get when they are wet.

Use white baking soda, such as Arm and Hammer laundry detergent. It works great eliminating odors.

You can also use a cup of white vinegar in the final rinse. That helps.

    :-)
You can, but those products don't have the cleaning power of laundry detergent. Make sure to use hot water to disinfect the wash cloths until you can get some detergent. In a pinch I have also used dawn dish soap when I have run out of laundry detergent.

I only uses fabric softener to wash my clothes?

well i got up this morning and was going to wash a load of clothes and my roommates used all my detergent..yeah i know messed up so....i just put fabric softener in? what will it do? clean and make them smell nice as well? I only uses fabric softener to wash my clothes?
It won't clean your clothes it will only make them soft. I only uses fabric softener to wash my clothes?
No, it won't clean them. It doesn't have the detergents necessary to truly clean clothes. The water will clean them a bit, but if the clothes were sweaty or really dirty, they won't be clean. I'd just put them straight back in the washing machine, along with detergent this time (go out and buy some). Don't dry them, though, since any stains that may be on your clothes will be set once you dry them.
    no -- you need detergent.

science lesson: the soap molecules in the detergent will be attracted to the dirt in your clothes, and the water will wash it away in the final rinse.

all fabric softener will do is make them soft and smell good [not clean though]
no they will most likely smell great but not washed. when that happens you can use dish washing liquid just a little bit to wash clothes. Your clothes will most likely be super soft and limp and might have a grimy feel to them.
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>

    Yes it should :]
You need a detergent to assist in removing dirt, odors and stains. If your clothes are really filthy, fabric softener alone will not do the job.
well thats kinda ehh. i will just make your clothes softer i mean atleast put some diswashing soap in there or something so they will get clean or you could run down to the store and get some more detrgent.
It won't clean your clothes as well, but no harm done. Just don't make a habit of it or it will start to ';soften'; your items a little too much and ruin them.
no it well not clean them at all epically noticeable if there is dirt on it save the water and just wait till you have more laundry detergent.
It probably wont clean it much.

It will just make it soft, smell nice, and it just won't be as clean as usual. but you probably wont notice

i don't think they will be much cleaner. the water and agitation does help to get rid of yuck. i wouldn't count on it fi you are extra funky...
It won't get them too clean but what I do when I run out is use some dish soap. You only need a little though. Just like one good squeeze.
You will have nice soft, good smelling underwear with turd stains in them.
Probably won't make them as clean but at least they will be soft!
lol no it will just make them smell nice it wont clean them dude just go out and get some
At least they'll smell clean even if they're not...
ewww...i choose clean over soft anyday
    yes

You sure it won't fit in the washer? I have a large capacity top-loader and have washed as much as 20 yards of cotton print in it, the same weight as you'd use for quilting. If your fabric is heavier, I'd go to a laundromat with big machines, or take some rough measurements and cut your fabric in half or whatever works for your pattern.

Best way to wash vertical blinds made of fabric?

I'd like to wash some vertical blinds made of fabric. I'm assuming that taking them down and tossing them into the washer, on the delicate cycle, will work fine. At the bottom of each blind there's a rectangular weight sewn into the blind and can't be removed. I'm assuming it won't rust after the fact. :)

Any suggestions or thing I should be wary of? Thanks.Best way to wash vertical blinds made of fabric?
my guess is if you put them in the washer they might fall apart you might be better off doing them in the bathtub and hand wash with detergent then hand from shower rod to drip dry and hang them back up when damp the weight at the bottom should pull to take wrinkles outBest way to wash vertical blinds made of fabric?
Use lukewarm water in the bath with a gentle liquid detergent. Dip and pull the blind out several times giving it a bit of a wiggle each time it goes in (sounds daft but I have found this works! lol). Rinse in the same way. Dry extended and rehang as quickly as possible

Do you need to wash 100% cotton fabric before sewing?

I am new to sewing and will be working on a project soon. I purchased 2 yards of 100% cotton from a fabric store. (i forgot to ask this question and now do not have their number..) Should I pre-wash the fabric or not?Do you need to wash 100% cotton fabric before sewing?
Well, I'm going to be the odd man out and say you don't have to wash your fabric. In the past, dyes were not always colorfast and tended to run. But with the new dyes today, that isn't always the case. Test a small piece to see if the fabric color will bleed. If it doesn't, you don't have to wash it. I would recommend always washing red and purple fabric, because they are tricky. And if you wash one fabric, you have to wash all the fabric going into that quilt, because you want the shrinkage to be the same throughout. Washing the fabric also takes the sizing out of it, so if you like the crisper feel when you are sewing, use a 50% water and liquid starch mixture in a spray bottle while you are pressing your material. And I've never washed a piece of fabric that I didn't have to iron it, so expect to spend some time at the ironing board. I also cut my fabric into manageable pieces (1/2 to 1 yard) before I wash them so that they are easier to iron. The shrinkage is manageable, but this will give your quilt a different texture. Some like it and some don't.Do you need to wash 100% cotton fabric before sewing?
Yes. I would also dry it and iron it flat.
I would. You don't want it to shrink after all that hard work!
I'm glad you asked first. If the fabric is washable, you should always wash it first. Some fabrics have a finish on them that must be removed first. You also don't know how long it has been in the store.
    Yes

100% cotton is famous for its shrinkage, and you need to pre-wash it so that all the shrinkage happens before you sew it. That way, it will stay the right size when you wash it after it is sewn.
Yes I would definitely wash it first. The fabric will shrink a bit. And it would be sad to have a finished project that shrank the first time you washed it and ruin it. So to avoid disappointment definitely wash the fabric first.
I would say yes (for clothing) unless you are making a quilt in which case, most people want the puckered softness that results from washing after the item is sewn.

Will your clothing fabric be degenerated if you wash it in warm water?

My AE shorts were washed in warm water (not by me), but it's supposed to be washed in cold water only. The fabric seems to be faded and not like it was before. Is there anyway to restore it? What extent of damage was done to the shorts? Will your clothing fabric be degenerated if you wash it in warm water?
    Yes and No.

Use a baking thermomter to ensure the temperature of the water is NOT over 116 degrees. This is commonly called a 'neutral' washing temperature. This being the case, you will not damage any fabrics, even delicates. Will your clothing fabric be degenerated if you wash it in warm water?

How do you wash acrylic paint on fabric?

I began painting clothes with acrylic paint. I washed a pair of jeans and the paint faded. I take hours to paint designs on the clothes and i am looking for a way to make them last! Any suggestions? tyHow do you wash acrylic paint on fabric?
Acrylic is thick and it just sits on the surface of the cloth. You need something that would be a little more thinner or you can apply the acrylic in thinner coats so it will stain the through the pores of the fabric. I don't recommend using acrylic at all though. It hardens and the color would flake off. There are paints for fabrics available and you can even apply silk screening ink with a paint brush. You just don't want stay away from laying down thick coats of paint that would decimate your design. How do you wash acrylic paint on fabric?
    1.Lather

    2.Wet cloth

    3.Acetylene
That was a good reply up ther in cashew.... Don't use acrylic. If you already have then you need to hand wash, hang dry and apply vaseline on to the paint as its drying. Dont fold on the design. To prevent cracking in the cold apply a thin coat of vaseline. In the heat the acrlylic softens up into a bendable material. Vaseline will only help slow down the damaging process. I know because it's happened to me. I now only airbrush with fabric paint on fabric.

I started using acrylic paint on clothes (okay, accidentally) 35 years ago. I never could get it out. Now I don't try. There are mediums for making acrylic paint more flexible for use on cloth. You can find them at art and craft stores, and on the online stores, as well. Have fun.
DecoArt makes a fabric paint that comes in about 30 different colors. Plus they also make a fabric painting medium that you add to your regular acrylics to make it adhere to the fabruc better. Use hard bristle brushes to scrub the paint into your fabric while painting, instead of just laying it onto the fabric. I find it best to line dry the garment instead of putting it through the dryer. DecoArt can be purchased at craft stores, or try www.craftcatalog.com.

  • What should I do if I wash my jeans in fabric softener instead of liquid detergent?

I washed 10 items mostly jeans, including a jeans skirt, jeans jacket and cotton pants all with fabric softener instead of liquid detergent as I rushed the wash and didn't look at the bottle when adding the liquid to the wash. I never wash my jeans with fabric softener b/c I don't like the fuzziness that stays on the jeans. If you can't stand the way they feel, wash them again. And stop using fabric softener; it messes with your fabrics. Use a cup of white vinegar instead, int he final rinse. What should I do if I wash my jeans in fabric softener instead of liquid detergent?
Everything is completely fine, no harm done.=)
I'd just run them through the rinse cycle once more before drying. That should remove most of it.
just hang them up to dry and wash as normal next time around.

Can i wash my 100% polyester fabric and 100% nylon lining pants using washing machine?

If it says 'reduce moisture' on the care tag, I sure would not put them through a wash cycle at all. The tag has that information for a reason.

Certainly some fabrics like rayon and kinds of wool that are dry cleanable which can also be washed on the gentle cycle in cold water. Spritz the lining with lemon juice and water (preferably squeezed lemon juice and not the bottled stuff...but the bottled stuff does work in a pinch). Take the drapes out in the sun and let them dry and bleach naturally in the sun. You'll also get a nice fresh scent when you're done. It works very well, especially on cotton-poly mixes like microfiber.

If you want really great colors use fabric paint markers. They have them at Micheal's. They are often right across from the t- shirts. If you only want black use a permanent marker. you can test it on any scrap fabric, and send it through the wash.

  • How do I wash non-permanent crinkle fabric clothes?

I have just bought some clothes with the new fashion of crinkled fabric. the fabrics include silk, cotton and polyester and a very fine see-through cotton. The instructions say to use the broomstick method of washing to ensure that the clothes remain crinkled. Can anyone who has successfully washed these types of crinkle clothes (skirts, blouses) give me some advice on do's and don'ts before I attempt to crinkle wash the clothes? How do I wash non-permanent crinkle fabric clothes?
Wash by hand with some Woolite or dishwashing detergent in lukewarm to cool water. Rinse thoroughly. Place on a towel, roll the towel to get most of the water out. The secret to keeping the crinkle is then to twist the fabric but do not stretch the fabric (sort of like wringing it) then let it dry in that shape, put rubber bands or tie with strips of cloth. Once it is dry, take off ties, shake out and, Voila, it is clean, crinkled and ready to wear again! Used this method with a velveteen crinkle skirt. How do I wash non-permanent crinkle fabric clothes?

What can I use instead of fabric softener for my wash?

I am allergic to most smells and need something natural that I have at home-I' m not being cheap either! What can I use instead of fabric softener for my wash?
Buy unscented laundry detergent and forget the fabric softener. It is totally unnecessary. What can I use instead of fabric softener for my wash?
Vinegar. Add 1 cup of vinegar to your rinse water.
If you have an HE washer, you will only need 1/2 cup of vinegar. Be sure to use white vinegar, as other vinegars will stain laundry.

You can put it in the fabric softener dispenser. It will not soften the clothes per se, but it will strip all detergent out. Detergent residue can make clothes stiff.

Not only will it strip all detergent out of your laundry, but it will also help to keep your washer clean! Which is a big benefit for HE washers, and regular washers as well.

If you want to soften the clothes naturally, add baking soda to the washer drum before you start the washer. 1 cup for a full load in a regular washer, 1/2 cup in an HE washer.

Baking soda gives your detergent a cleaning boost. It also doubles the whitening power of liquid chlorine bleach (like Clorox), so you can use half the regular amount of bleach if you use that same amount of baking soda.

For example, if one normally uses 1 cup of Clorox, they could use just 1/2 cup and 1/2 cup baking soda for the same whitening power.

The bleach would go in the bleach dispenser and the baking soda would go directly in the washer drum. This also naturally softens the laundry.

    Hope this helps!
Try a cup of vinegar in the rinse water.

What is a good marker to use on fabric that won't wash out?

I want to draw some designs on my jeans. I know that Sharpe markers will do ok at first but they wash out. Even ink pens wash out enough to make an intentional design look faded...and will fade completely over time. I'm looking for an alternative to paint since it's so difficult to get the same detail as drawing...unless there's something I don't know about. What is a good marker to use on fabric that won't wash out?

If you are only trying to go darker in color, Pigma brush markers should work well on properly prepared fabric (quilters use them a lot, but Michael's sells them in the scrapbook section). If you need to go lighter, you can use DecoFabric Metallic %26amp; Opaque fabric paint markers - they work on dark fabric. You get about the same definition from them as from regular Sharpies. I can't remember if I bought mine at Michael's or Walmart, but in case you can't find them locally, Dharma Trading Co., etc. has them on-line. Follow directions for pre-washing, for drying/heat-setting, and for washing your finished product, and you should be fine.

You need fabric paint. Some stores also carry pens which outline your design. Michael's, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby. Not all stores carry what you need. My Wal-mart does not. Try fabric stores. They carries supplies for those who like to be creative on fabric.
My vote is for the fabric paint pens. They work out great and you can use them on another piece of fabric and then pick up just a little with another brush for your project if you want a really light application. Good luck!
There are permanent markers, but I use fabric crayons that you iron over after you have drawn your pattern.
go to your local wal-mart they have a million in their arts and craft section, they all work out very well.

Should I pre-wash fabric before I make bags to sell on etsy?

Don't pre-wash ALL the fabric unless it turns out you have to - the bags will look nicer with the 'new fabric' finish. Just cut a hunk to test with. Measure its size before you wash it and again after it has dried, so you have an idea about percent shrinkage. Check the wash water for dye discharge - if the water has much color, you'll be safest warning your customers to wash separately. If the fabric drastically changes size or color when it's first washed, you may be better off pre-washing, drying, and ironing the entire batch first. Or label it 'dry clean only.'

Good luck with the bags - hope they sell well for you.Should I pre-wash fabric before I make bags to sell on etsy?
yes i would, cause i had a lady very nice lady make me my prom dess out of them most pretty stuff we could find she told me she always washes before one to see if it has a snagg so that as way when she is done she does it again. and also u never know where or what the fabric has been on. some of them can be old and u just got it from the store. i would but use the lights and gentle. and also i dont know what kindu are using but some have a starch in it that makes them hard. i made my self a blanket out of this fabric and it was so hard well my cat got it dirty one day so i washed it wish i would of done that a long time ago it was so soft after that. i would if i were u but make sure u look on the end of the fabric bolt to see if it can be washed most people forget to do that. that is one thing i learned from that lady oh she makes clothes for reinactments for the civil war. she is busy all year. i was blessed to of met her. welll good luck with the bags hope they sell goodShould I pre-wash fabric before I make bags to sell on etsy?
It definitely depends on the fabric - most fabric comes with a ';sizing'; - and it help the fabric to keep it shape - also canvas would have a water proofing possibly -

I would say - don't pre wash - unless it is from an recycled t-shirt, or jacket, etc.
If you're advertising the purse as ';washable'; definately I would prewash the fabric. Otherwise, it depends on the fabric if I prewash it or not. Like a cotton fabric, yes, wash it and then steam press it before cutting and sewing.
I would not pre wash it - assuming it's new material, there is no need. If you are using recycled material then definitely yes of course.

What to useget urine smell out of wood floors-have tryed perioxide mouth wash & fabric softener store products

Straight vinegar. Let it set on the spots for a 1/2 hour, and cover it with a damp cloth. Another choice is going to pet smart and getting,'; natures miracle'; Don't follow the instructions, pour it straight onto the floor where the urine is and cover with a damp cloth for 24 hours, then wipe away the next day and the smell will be gone. Oh, natures miracle has an enzyme that eats up the urine and neutralizes it. See even BERT below me knows what she's talking about. So the thumbs down don't matter, we are right!!! Confused by is right also!!:) LA is also correct!!!What to useget urine smell out of wood floors-have tryed perioxide mouth wash %26amp; fabric softener store products
I'm with ,confused by court order. Natures Miracle is an enzyme that will actually eat the substance of the urine away and it is gone. It isn't instant, it takes a couple of days because of the way it works. It also comes in 2 formulas. One is especially for cat urine (you didn't specify). That was my problem and cat urine is the hardest to get rid of. I cleaned the wood first with TSP (Savogran brand, the others are diluted) then used the Natures miracle and you can't smell it any more. My case was severe. I have a cat in advanced stages of diabetes and she practically ruined my house. What to useget urine smell out of wood floors-have tryed perioxide mouth wash %26amp; fabric softener store products
    ODORCIDE, google it.
Get an enzyme cleaner from the pet store that is made for eliminating pet odors - the enzymes will literally eat away the uric acid and/or ammonia that are causing the pee smell to linger.
We had the same problem. We tried EVERYTHING! The cure was waxing the floor. We have hardwoods with a wax finish and it was not until I re-waxed ( which I held off doing because of the odor ) that the smell went away.

If you have a polyurethane finish, strip the floor and re-finish it.
Try Nature's Miracle Stain and Odor Remover found in most pet stores.
It depends on the urine - if it is from a cat you may try ammonia. This is because cat pee naturally oxides into ammonia, which is why it smells so horrible, but also allows you to use the universal ';like dissolves like'; rule of cleaning.

Otherwise, use bleach. Test it on the wood, to make sure that it does not destroy the floor, but if all is ok, mop the whole floor with undilluted bleach, and plan on being out of the house for a while. Again, do not do this with cat pee, as ammonia and bleach together produce chlorine gas, which will make you very ill (if not dead!).

How much will quilting fabric shrink if I wash it before piecing it together?

I'm trying to figure out how big my pieces of fabric will be after I wash them. I know that I have heard cotton quilting fabric shrinks about 2-3%. Is this usually the standard? How much will quilting fabric shrink if I wash it before piecing it together?
It depends on the quality of the fabric. The good stuff that you buy at quilt shops is more expensive (usually in the $8 - $9 range) but it shrinks less and the colors are less likely to run. The cheap stuff that you can pick up at WalMart or the large chain fabric store will shrink a bit more, and some of the colors may fade or bleed. Also, different kinds of fabric shrink differently. Cotton flannel will shrink considerably more than plain cotton.

I don't prewash my fabrics, but that's a personal preference. There are arguments both for and against. I like the crisp feel of unwashed fabric when I'm sewing, and I like the old fashioned puckery look of the finished quilt after washing it. And frankly, washing is kind of a hassle - I like to be able to just grab something off the shelf and start sewing. If you're using good quality fabric, have tested the colors to make sure they won't bleed (cut a small piece and put it in a white or clear bowl with some hot soapy water for a while, then blot on a white towel) you should be okay not washing it. You also need to watch for reactions to the chemicals in fabrics - if your hands get too dry or itchy or if you find yourself with the sniffles whenever you handle the fabric, then prewash it. Since I don't prewash, I always wash my finished quilt with a Shout Color Catcher the first couple of times. This soaks up any dye that is released into the water so it doesn't stain the light portions of the quilt. How much will quilting fabric shrink if I wash it before piecing it together?
    wash beforehand Report Abuse

Test the colorfastness of your fabrics first if you are at all concerned about bleeding. Unless the colors are dark (red and purple are the worst), you should be fine. Shout Color Catchers come in a box, like fabric softener sheets (only the go in the wash, of course). Report Abuse

I always pre wash my fabric before I cut. After all the work that goes into sewing I don't want it ruin because it shrank

If you already have cut your squares or pieces this could be tricky. They could shrink differently. You are going to have to iron and measure after they are washed.
Yes, cotton will shrink about 2-3% when it is washed, and it's not consistent. If you use several different fabrics in a quilt and don't prewash them, they may shrink at different rates and make the quilt top look puckered.
Yes , your right . I always wash my fabric first . I don't want any surprises for the one time that 2 or 3 % doesn't work ;)))
I pre-wash all fabrics for quilts and clothing. I guess it is the ';rather be safe than sorry'; factor.

Rubbing alcohol will remove the tape residue...:)How to get duct tape off fabric and can you wash it?
the easy way to keep the mess down is pull the duct tape off and re tape it after washing. Duct tape won't really pe sticky after you wash it, and it will set hard to what you wash it on. Most brands of duct tape won't get all gooey unless they get oil or something oil based on them, so the mess in the washer isn't a big concern.

What kind of blanket are you making?I'm going to buy some fabric for a blanket. What is the best thing to do when I wash the fabric.?

What's the best way to wash cross stitch fabric?

I do cross stitching and want to know what is the best way to wash or whiten back up the cloth after you have done the pattern with your grubby fingers, which may have had snack foods on them while cross stiching the pattern :o) The cloth is just never as clean and white after I do the design as it was when I started out. How can I get that clean white look back after I have crosstitched on it?What's the best way to wash cross stitch fabric?
bleach may do terrible things to your embroidery threads.

dish detergent is often recommended. If the embroidery includes silk, use a cleaning method *intended* for silk or at least for hair (i.e. Orvus or NoMoreTears). Avoid cleaners that include dyes. Many whiteners are actually blue dyes. Such wil throw off your colors.

If you've been eating chocolate, the iron in the chocolate may be leaving rust stains. Good luck on getting out rust without messing up the embroidery.

Let the embroidery dry face down on a white towel. If color bleeds into the towel, repeat. If color still bleeds into the towel, repeat. If color still beeds into the towel, give up. Do *not* hang it up to dry because any bleeding would go into adjacent areas and may never ever come out.

For future projects: don't do that. Earlier this week I was snacking on chocolate-covered peanuts in 80+潞F weather, using a spoon to keep the chocolate off my hands. I've eaten potatoe chips with chop sticks. You don't need to stop snacking unless you want to do so. IMHO you do need to stop touching the snacks with your hands as you embroider. What's the best way to wash cross stitch fabric?
    By hand with dish detergent.
Wash it in mild, dishwashing soap by hand, in cold water, warm could cause certain colors to bleed. Be careful of scrubbing it, because you don't want to pull out any of your stiches. When you've cleaned it, then blot it between 2 clean towels, do NOT wring it or you can warp the design. Allow to dry, those cool sweater racks that you can put over the tub are great for this. To iron your design, place the design side DOWN and sandwich between 2 clean towels or pressing cloths. I keep muslin on hand for this.

And the way to avoid getting the cloth dirty is to not eat while your stitching it. As a matter of fact, that's how I keep myself from munching...I grab my cross stitching. It's an excellent weight loss tip! I always wash my hands before starting, and never eat anything while I'm working on it.
Best way is to hand wash it in non biological powder. Dry it flat. If it needs ironed. Iron it from the wrong side and place it stitching side down on a thick towel so the stitches do not get flattened. I hope this was of some help to you.
i let mine soak in laundry soap for a day then let it dry that works for me
i would say just wash it in warm water with bleach alternative detergent. iron it after so it looks nice again..... i always wash my hands before i work on mine
what works best for me after I have finished a cross stitch to wash is of course wash your hands then fill your kitchen sink with lukewarm soapy water and was by hand. to dry just put it in a towel. fold the towel in half first and out it in the middle and fold towel over cross stitch. plus washing it by hand prevents cross stitch to shrink

When do I add fabric softener to the wash?

I want to use fabric softener in my laundry but I don't know when to add it! When am I supposed to?When do I add fabric softener to the wash?
The Rinse Cycle! It does wonders!

Dryer sheets don't quite do the job. Softener keeps it 5x nicer. When do I add fabric softener to the wash?
Use a Downey Ball!! Easiest to use...just fill with softener, close lid, throw in washer on top of clothes.

    It's that easy!
The time for softener is in the rinse cycle... some washing machines have a ';special holder'; for that so you can add it when you are putting in the laundry soap... and just forget it!

I tend to forget till it's all done and then it's too late... unless you want to reset it to the rinse cycle... but the other solution is to add a good dryer sheet in your load when you put the clothes in the dryer!
At the beginning of the rinse cycle
When it starts rinse cycle.Wait till water level is covering clothes add softener.
Fabric softener gets added to the final rinse. Most machines have a fabric softener dispenser, and will dispense it at the right time. If your machine doesn't have one then either you can sit there and watch until the final rinse or Downy sells a dispenser called the Downy Ball. You fill it and put it in the washer at the start of the wash cycle with your clothing. During the spin cycle the stopper comes unplugged and the fabric softener is released. You can use your favorite fabric softener with the Downy Ball. I like Downy's Clean Breeze scent.

There should be a compartment for Fabric Softner in your washing machine. Just fill it before you start the wash, and it will automatically add it when the time is right. You dont have to do anything after that except take out your clothes and dry them. I hope this helps.

PS. You can also buy the detergent with softener added to it, and not need to fill the compartment as the detergent also softens the clothes.

PPS. Dryer sheets are good too.

Does anyone know of a way to soften clothes in the wash without using fabric softener?

I am allergic to most chemicals and my clothes shrink in my uncontrollable dryer. Is there anything natural I can put in the wash to soften my clothes because when I hang them to dry they get they stiff and I have a weird skin arthritis condition called Psoriatic Arthritis and most chemicals really do damage to my flesh. So anything natural I can add to the wash or rinse cycle would be great! Thanks.Does anyone know of a way to soften clothes in the wash without using fabric softener?
You can throw a tennis ball in the dryer - that really does work to soften the clothes obviously without any scent. Seventh Generation is a good company to look to for completely scent free fabric softener - or try your local Health/Natural Food Center....Does anyone know of a way to soften clothes in the wash without using fabric softener?
use some vinegar and to make it smell nice, add a few drop of lavendar.
    vinegar----think that came from Heloise
Add a cup or two of baking soda to the wash water. It helps soften hard water.

Add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. It helps break down the soap so it rinses out better.

How do you remove dye from fabric - I had a red shirt bleed onto other fabric in the wash.?

Go to Joann's and get a Carbona color run remover. I had a washable black ultrasuede jacket bleed all over the cream fleece lining when I washed it and turned it a nasty shade of grey - this stuff restored it to the original color.

Also, you should consider setting the dye in the red shirt before washing it with anything else again. How do you remove dye from fabric - I had a red shirt bleed onto other fabric in the wash.?
Can't it will eventually fade thoughHow do you remove dye from fabric - I had a red shirt bleed onto other fabric in the wash.?
you won't be able to remove the dye. if its all white clothing then just bleach it all white.
use some oxy clean and wash the reds by it self. Red clothes dont get washed with other things.
soak items in water and liquid dry cleaning solution-buy it at a shoe repair-Kleeno-is one brand-carbontetrachloride?

Does fabric paint completely wash out if you don't iron it in?

    Hi,

I am making an outfit for fancy dress and I could do with painting on some clothes. I'd rather be able to wear the clothes again though, so was wondering if there is a way to remove all the paint effectively if you don't fix it on by ironing...? Or is it fairly permanent?Does fabric paint completely wash out if you don't iron it in?
Some of it will wash out if you don't let it set too long, but some of it won't. So, unfortunately, you're stuck with it. I would suggest getting something at a second-hand store to paint on. Or, you may be able to find something on a really good sale. If it comes out really well, but you know you won't ever wear it again, make a cardboard foDoes fabric paint completely wash out if you don't iron it in?
Whether you iron or not, it is permanent.

How do I wash curly fleece fabric so it doesn't come out bad?

I used the cold washing machine it still came out worse. Would wool setting work? How do I wash curly fleece fabric so it doesn't come out bad?
    don't use fabric softener

use a mild detergent, like baby detergent

if its a sweater, turn it inside out, if its a small blanket roll it up and put it in a pillow case, if its a large blanket encase it in a bed sheet with safety pins before the wash

yes use a wool or delicate setting

**you can make it fluffy again by brushing it gently with a suede brush**How do I wash curly fleece fabric so it doesn't come out bad?
What do you mean it comes out bad?

You should generally wash your fleece products in water that is 30-40 degrees.

  • What laundry detergent/fabric softener and wash/rinse temp do you use?

I use All Free Clear liquid detergent and Snuggle Blue Sparkle Cuddle Up Fresh dryer sheets and Warm Wash/Cold Rinse. What laundry detergent/fabric softener and wash/rinse temp do you use?
Ariel =)What laundry detergent/fabric softener and wash/rinse temp do you use?
    I use warm water wash for everything; Era detergent; cold water rinse;

Snuggle Green Burst fabric softner; and hot dryer .
Tide with color bleach or bleach alternative. I wash everything in cold because I'm cheap except for whites and underwear, I wash hot/cold rinse.
detergent I use is whatever is cheapest. to me it all does the same thing.

Temp it depends on what the clothing says to use.
Since I have a high efficiency washer, I use the cheapest HE detergent I can find.

    I use Snuggle dryer sheets.

If I hang the laundry out to dry I use a Snuggle liquid fabric softener.

Don't care what the perfuminess smells like because it all dissappears anyway and I can never smell it in my laundry.

I wash and rinse most stuff on cold. Though I do towels and my husbands greasy work clothes on hot wash.

I dry most laundry on the lowest warm setting except the towels and work clothes and they are on hot.

Unless of course I hang them outside on the clothesline to dry, which is not the towels.

Every detergent I have used (and I have used them all) does the same washing effect, and I have used regular detergent before I got the HE.

Some of them do have a stronger scent though and I don't really like that.

Then when I used to do my mothers laundry and she had wetted her pants a lot, I just used the cheapest detergent and a cup of ODO BAN in there to kill the smells. That worked great.
I use Ariel Sensations, and Aloe Vera, fabric conditioner. , I use all different cycles for washing. Cold wash , easy ironing. Mixed materials 40潞c - 60潞c wash, I have a AEG washing machine %26amp; it has many different programs to use , just depends on the material I am washing. Best one I have ever had, so far.
I prefer Tide detergent, any fragrance of Downy or Snuggle, and I wash in the temp that the tag in my clothes say to wash in and I rinse in cold because that is the only temp my washer rinses in.
I like All Free and Clear.. I have kids so it helps them not breakout.. I'm allergic to tide and it's expensive... I like Era/Wisk and All... We buy them from Bj's wholesale 300 oz. for under $10 it usually lasts acouple months.. I also like to add Baking Soda to the wash water, it helps get stains out of the children's clothing and it gets the grease out of my husband's work clothes.. A 12lb. container costs under $5... I also use it on the carpets, furniture etc...good luck
I use liquid laundry detergent and dryer sheets.

Fragrance free on both, whatever brand is cheapest. I use hot water for linens, socks, and underwear. And cold water for clothes.
Not all detergents are created equal. Tide is better than all others according to the test reports I've seen. All is in the middle of the pack. A cheaper detergent that does real well is Great Value (Wal Mart) Ultra Glacier Breeze.

Fabric softeners are best left for use in the dryer. The chemical properties of liquid softener 'gum' up the insides of washers over time. However if you must use a softener in the washer do so sparingly (I see it appears you use the dryer softener sheets).

As for wash and rinse temp, wash according to the particular fabrics care instructions. Most items can be done in cold wash and cold rinse.
